The exhibition “A Walk Through an Unstable Landscape” explores the subtle and often unpredictable interplay between a collector’s personal choices and the ever-changing artistic landscape.
For many years, Stella Art Foundation has occupied a prominent place on the Russian and international art scenes, consistently presenting contemporary Russian art in its own exhibition spaces, in Russia’s leading museums, and through international projects. The Foundation’s founder, Stella Kesaeva, served as commissioner of the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale three times: in 2009, 2011, and 2013.
Direct dialogue with artists has always been at the heart of the Foundation’s exhibition and collecting activities. Built over the years, the Stella Art Foundation collection reflects not only a history of personal choices but also a distinctive perspective on the development of contemporary Russian art.
The discerning selection of artists and individual works creates the collection’s own field of attraction and offers a particular lens through which to view and understand the Russian art scene today.
The exhibition deliberately forgoes a strict hierarchy of names and rigid divisions between artistic movements. Instead, it reflects a living, constantly changing cultural landscape in which artists, ideas, and artistic practices do not always fit familiar categories. Even historically established movements such as Moscow Conceptualism take on new and sometimes unexpected forms in the work of later generations. What unites the exhibition is not the artists’ affiliation with a particular movement or generation, but the independence of each artist’s statement. Every work on view is part of its creator’s broader intellectual and aesthetic project.
Within the exhibition space, the works enter into dialogue with one another, revealing inner connections, resonances, and contradictions. The tension between them creates points of attraction and repulsion that together form this “unstable landscape.”
The exhibition features more than 40 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, video, objects, and installations.
The exhibition is organized with the support of the Elena Ustinova Foundation and Irina Romanoff Club.
