The Evenings at Skaryatinsky series starts with a performance of Sergey Zagny – a prominent music composer and author-performer.

The inevitable question: Why should it be him? – could be countered with an equally reasonable question: Why should it be anybody else?

Yet, there is some answer, I think.

It is not only because Sergey Zagny is one of the most consistent and appealing avant-guard composers in contemporary academic music. It is also because he’s particularly keen on creative partnerships, both with his musical colleagues and people from other arts: poets, artists and actors. Suffice it to mention his joint performances with artists like Andrey Monastyrsky, Mark Pekarsky, Nikolai Polissky, Dmitry Prigov, Lev Rubinstein and Masha Chuikova.

Zagny’s artistic activity, in which the space dimension of the music is as important as the dimension of the sound itself, fits quite naturally in the contemporary artistic process, demonstrating very clearly and convincingly the conventionality and permeability of the borders between various genres and art fields.
